Congratulations Alvin Rosenfeld

Please join me in congratulating Alvin Rosenfeld, professor of English in the College of Arts and Schiences and faculty in the Borns Jewish Studies Program, on a $6 million grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to examine antisemitism’s historical roots and global resurgence. Alvin is the Irving M. Glazer Chair of Jewish Studies and founding director of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism. 

As co-principal investigator on the grant, Alvin will work with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., to conduct scholarly research and develop publications and a podcast series aimed at deepening public understanding and recognition of antisemitism. In addition, the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism will host two international scholarly conferences at IU Bloomington and oversee a Social Media and Hate Research Lab that studies how antisemitic content circulates online. The project will draw on partnerships with several antisemitism research centers worldwide. 

In a recent news release about the award, Alvin notes, “Widespread hostility to Jews has accelerated in recent years and is an increasingly threatening phenomenon in this country and abroad. My colleagues and I are dedicated to understanding the various forces that drive such animosity and will aim to formulate the means to contend with it effectively.”
