Michel Chaouli

Wednesday, December 10, 2025

Please join me in congratulating Michel Chaouli, professor of Germanic studies and comparative literature in the College of Arts and Sciences, on his recent election to the esteemed German Academy for Language and Literature.

Michel, who also serves as director of the Center for Theoretical Inquiry in the Humanities, is a literary scholar whose research focuses on aesthetic theory, literature, and philosophy. He has a particular interest in ways of speaking about intensive encounters with art.

Johannes Türk, chair of the Department of Germanic Studies, said in a recent message to Michel’s colleagues, “The academy plays a central role in Germany and in the world…[Michel] is the third of only three members from the United States in what is arguably the most prestigious academy devoted to literature and language in German-speaking Europe.”

Congratulations, Professor Chaouli!
