Please join me in congratulating Indiana University’s debate team for winning a national title at the American Debate Association National Championship in March.
Several IU Bloomington students won awards at the event. Lily Jones and Jay Duggal won the Junior Varsity National Championship title, a first for IU Debate. Within the division, Jones was also recognized as the top speaker and Duggal placed third overall among speakers. Additionally, students Adam Foudall and Rowlin Garcia received the Front Royal Cup, which is awarded to the top novice debate team in the nation across the full competitive season. Aubrey Thomas was recognized as the third overall speaker.
Housed in the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, IU Debate also has strong ties across campus, including with the College of Arts and Sciences, the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, and the Office of Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
In a recent story about the team’s win, Brian DeLong, the team’s coach and a senior lecturer at the O’Neill School, said, “This team represents the best of Indiana University—students from different disciplines coming together to tackle complex issues and communicate solutions at the highest level. This national title proves that when you give IU students the right resources, they don't just participate in the conversation—they lead it.”
