Getting started

Your guide to graduate student orientation

Welcome to IU Bloomington and the next chapter of your academic career. Because graduate study is specialized, most of your orientation will happen within your specific school or department. This page serves as your home base for the university-wide steps every new student needs to take before classes begin.

Orientation steps

For all graduate students

While your department handles program-specific events, use these university-level tools to set up your accounts and explore campus resources.

All graduate students are invited to explore the New Graduate Student Guide (available by April 1). The guide is hosted on Canvas, and an IU login will be required to join the course. Explore the guide as soon as you gain access to IU online services.

To complete the required orientation components, you will need to do the following:

  • Set up your IU computing accounts.
  • Set up your Duo Two-Step Login. We recommend that students download the Duo Mobile app on their own device.

Additional steps

For international students

If you are an international graduate student, you must complete several university-level requirements in addition to your departmental orientation.
  • Complete your Atlas checklist

You must finish all tasks in your Atlas checklist before you can register for classes.

  • International Orientation Canvas course

You will receive an email invitation to a separate International Orientation course. This is required for all new international graduate students and covers immigration status, travel, and local resources.

  • Vaccinations and TB testing

You must submit proof of required vaccinations and complete a TB test at the Student Health Center to register for future classes.

  • Traveling to Bloomington

Plan your arrival in the U.S. and learn how to navigate transportation to campus.

  • Arriving on campus

Complete mandatory check-in tasks as soon as you reach Bloomington.
