IU student seizes opportunities to transform lives

Karis Balmer studies epidemiology and has had the opportunity to work alongside distinguished faculty in hands-on research during her first year at IU. Her interest in research grew through faculty mentorship and involvement with the Center of Excellence for Women in Technology, where she conducted research on topics such as cardiovascular and mental health.

Balmer found her community through service-focused organizations. She is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity known for its annual Rubber Duck Race fundraiser supporting local causes like youth empowerment and food security. She also participates in the IU Dance Marathon, the world’s second-largest student-run philanthropy, raising funds for Riley Hospital for Children.

IU offers endless opportunities for research, community impact, and hands-on experience to prepare students for the future.
