IU grad answers the call to combating fast fashion

Sierra Shambaugh turned her passion for fashion and sustainability into a thriving vintage thrift store—all while earning her degree. She launched Tailored Thrifts as a sophomore to promote sustainability in retail and challenge the stigma around secondhand clothing. Her ambition and creativity took her from selling online and hosting pop-up events to opening a brick-and-mortar location.

As a merchandising major at the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design, Sierra gained valuable business knowledge through the guidance of her professors and interdisciplinary courses that aligned with her goals and values, allowing her pioneer her own path. She also found her community through leadership roles in the Retail Studies Organization and the Equestrian Club.

IU offers countless ways for students to build their brand and bring their bold business ideas to life.
