When I first arrived in Bloomington as a newly minted Ph.D. starting my academic career, I was filled with excitement at the prospect of joining one of the most storied higher education institutions in America, if not the world. The thrill of launching my career was mixed with all the anticipation and uncertainty we face when navigating new beginnings and unknown challenges. Almost three decades later, I am faced with a similar array of emotions. I am overjoyed at the prospect of coming home and mindful of the many important responsibilities ahead.
One of my first IU Bloomington memories was at a new faculty and staff reception where I had a chance to meet Herman B Wells. He was warm and gracious to all and seemed to know something about everyone in the greeting line. This was my introduction to the IU Bloomington campus and the ethos of the Bloomington community. It was—and is—a place built on relationships and common bonds, even among those with strong differences. During my 18 years on the faculty, I learned what it meant to build relationships with faculty, staff, and students that could advance the university and build on its tremendous achievements, while working to partner with fellow Bloomingtonians to support one another.
As I prepare to assume the role of chancellor for the IU Bloomington campus, let me start by thanking everyone for their commitment to the cause of building and strengthening our common bonds and working to promote excellence in all aspects of university and community life. We are the benefactors of the hard work, dedication, and persistence of those who came before us to advance IU Bloomington. We have a duty to these colleagues and an obligation to each other to carry forward the IU Bloomington tradition to the best of our abilities. Together, we can strengthen the foundation of this remarkable campus and redefine what it means to be a leading public research university.
For all who engaged in the search process over the past year, from members of the search committee to those who participated in the open forums, I thank you for your time, thoughtfulness, and careful consideration. Your investment in this process sends a strong message that the broader community cares deeply about the institution. I want to thank President Whitten and the Board of Trustees for entrusting me with this role.
I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work. I look forward to giving back to the university that has given me so much and leading the IU Bloomington campus to new heights in education, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the state and beyond.
