Student research opportunities

Access research from your first semester

At IU Bloomington, students begin contributing to research early—working alongside faculty on active projects and building experience that shapes their future and advances real-world work.

Hands-on experience from the start

Coursework builds your foundation—but research is where you apply it. At IU Bloomington, students have the opportunity to be part of research teams and other creative experiences from the start, contributing to work already underway across disciplines.

IU Bloomington students can:

  • Join research teams, where they work alongside faculty, graduate students, and postdocs on active research projects.
  • Participate in layered-learning environments, where they are embedded into collaborative research teams.
  • Engage in experiential learning activities like cultural immersion or service and leadership opportunities.
  • Apply their knowledge to real situations, allowing them to build skills that translate directly to careers or graduate study.

Students also connect to research happening across Indiana University—expanding their opportunities through a broader network of faculty, labs, and partners.

Why research experience matters

Students who participate in research gain more than experience—they develop the skills, confidence, and direction that shape what comes next.

At IU Bloomington, that work also contributes to something larger. Students collaborate with world-renowned faculty on projects that advance knowledge, support communities, and expand the reach of Indiana University’s research.
